Chinese e-commerce giant Pinduoduo’s shopping app, Temu, has seen significant success in the U.S. app stores. In September, it reached the top spot on the U.S. App Store and has continued to maintain a highly-ranked position, including being the No. 1 free app on Google Play since December 29, 2022.
The app’s rapid growth can be attributed to its marketing efforts, as well as its strategy of offering cheap factory-to-consumer goods and encouraging users to share the app with friends in exchange for free products.
According to data from app intelligence firm Sensor Tower, Temu has seen 5 million U.S. installs this January alone and has achieved a total of 19 million lifetime installs across the App Store and Google Play, with the majority coming from the U.S.
The growth strategy of Temu is similar to that of TikTok, which heavily invested in advertising and user acquisition in the early stages to personalize its content and gain a following.
