Employees at Google raised concerns at a recent meeting that the company is losing its competitive edge in artificial intelligence (AI) due to the quick rise of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and the head of Google’s AI division, Jeff Dean, responded to the concerns by stating that Google has similar capabilities in its LaMDA model, but that the company has more “reputational risk” in providing wrong information and therefore is being more cautious in its approach. ChatGPT has been criticized for its ability to create false but plausible information.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has acknowledged the risks associated with ChatGPT.
